  • Padres' Ben Gamel: Another start Wednesday

Gamel will serve as the Padres' designated hitter and bat eighth Wednesday versus the Orioles.

Gamel started in right field in his Padres debut Tuesday and went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI as part of a 10-3 blowout victory. Facing a 5.5-game deficit for the third NL Wild Card spot, San Diego will continue to ride the hot hand. That said, Gamel is a career .253/.333/.385 hitter in 2,210 plate appearances at the major-league level and should not be trusted for sustained fantasy production.

  • Padres' Garrett Cooper: Gets breather Wednesday

Cooper is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Orioles.

Ben Gamel will serve as the Padres' designated hitter and bat eighth. This appears to be a routine day of rest for Cooper, who has tallied two doubles and a homer over his last three games.

  • Padres' Ben Gamel: Knocks in two in team debut

Gamel went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 10-3 win against Baltimore.

The Padres acquired Gamel in a trade with the Rays in July, but the veteran outfielder had spent all of his time in the minors this season prior to being called up Tuesday. He contributed to a big offensive effort by San Diego with a two-run ground-rule double in the fifth inning to make the score 10-0. Gamel can play all three outfield spots and also saw some time at first base at Triple-A this season, so he has a path to somewhat frequent playing time, though he isn't expected to have an everyday role while up with San Diego.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Racks up three hits

Tatis went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Orioles.

Tatis was one of eight Padres to knock a double in the blowout win. He also upped his hitting streak to five games, a span in which he's gone 9-for-21 (.429) with two doubles, though his homer drought is now at 11 contests. The outfielder is slashing .265/.322/.470 with 19 homers, 20 stolen bases, 62 RBI, 67 runs scored, 27 doubles and a triple over 100 games this season.

  • Padres' Gary Sanchez: Sets tone with grand slam

Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 10-3 win over the Orioles.

Sanchez's big blast in the first inning gave the Padres all they needed for the win. He's hitting .300 in August (9-for-30) with four homers and nine RBI over eight games this month. Overall, the catcher is at a .221/.297/.503 slash line with 16 homers, 41 RBI, 30 runs scored and seven doubles through 219 plate appearances. Despite the strong recent form at the plate, Sanchez has been splitting time pretty evenly with Luis Campusano.

  • Padres' Michael Wacha: Impressive in return

Wacha (9-2) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out five over five scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Orioles.

(Video) Orioles vs. Padres Game Highlights (8/15/23) | MLB Highlights

Wacha returned from a six-week absence due to shoulder inflammation. He drew a tough assignment and pitched well in his first game back, throwing 48 of 77 pitches for strikes. He's been one of the Padres' best starters when healthy, posting a 2.68 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 78:26 K:BB over 90.2 innings across 16 starts. Wacha is tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Diamondbacks over the weekend.

  • Padres' Trent Grisham: Sitting amid slump

Grisham is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Orioles.

Grisham has gone 1-for-20 with 11 strikeouts over his last six games and his season OPS has dropped to .687. Fernando Tatis will patrol center field for the Padres on Tuesday as Ben Gamel gets a chance in right.

  • Padres' Ray Kerr: Optioned to El Paso

San Diego optioned Kerr to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.

Michael Wacha (shoulder) has been activated from the injured list in a corresponding roster move and will start for the Padres on Tuesday night against the Orioles. Kerr, 28, carries a 6.28 ERA in 14.1 innings this season at the major-league level.

  • Padres' Michael Wacha: Activated for return Tuesday

Wacha (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his return to the Padres' rotation Tuesday against the Orioles.

Wacha is officially back in the mix for San Diego following a six-week absence to heal a bout of shoulder inflammation. The 32-year-old right-hander had registered a strong 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 73:25 K:BB in 85.2 innings (15 starts) prior to the injury. He got up to 67 pitches in his final rehab outing last week at the Padres' complex in Arizona.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Reaches 20 thefts

Tatis went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base Monday in a loss to Baltimore.

The Padres were quieted by the Orioles' pitching, but Tatis notched an individual achievement with his 20th swipe of the campaign. The talented outfielder didn't play at all last season but has now stolen at least 20 bags in each of the past two campaigns in which he's participated. Tatis is also one homer away from his second 20-20 season, though all three marks in his .261/.319/.466 slash line currently qualify as career lows.

  • Padres' Kevin Kopps: Promoted to Triple-A

Kopps was promoted Tuesday from Double-A San Antonio to Triple-A El Paso, Sam Dykstra of reports.

Kopps earned the bump to Triple-A after working to a 2.63 ERA and 67:24 K:BB across 54.2 innings of relief this summer at the Double-A level. The 26-year-old right-hander was selected by the Padres in the third round of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas, where he won the Golden Spikes Award as a senior with a 0.90 ERA and 131:18 K:BB in 89.2 frames.

  • Padres' Garrett Cooper: Belts first homer as Padre

Cooper went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Orioles on Monday.

Cooper accounted for San Diego's only run of the contest with his 439-foot solo shot to center field in the sixth inning. It was his first long ball and first RBI since joining the Padres on Aug. 1. Cooper had hit 13 homers for Miami prior to the trade but has had a rough time since moving to the West Coast, slashing .188/.278/.438 over seven contests.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Makes history but takes loss

Darvish fell to 8-8 in Monday's 4-1 loss to Baltimore, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters over seven innings.

Darvish moved past Hideo Nomo for most strikeouts by a Japanese-born pitcher in MLB history when he fanned Ramon Urias in the sixth inning. That impressive feat aside, it was another frustrating performance for the right-hander, as he pitched pretty well overall but got little run support and took the loss. Darvish has posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 20 frames over three August starts but doesn't have a win to show for it. He's at a 2.98 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 42:13 K:BB over 42.1 innings in seven starts since the All-Star break.

  • Padres' Drew Carlton: Shifts to 60-day IL

Carlton (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday.

Carlton was bumped to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster for Ben Gamel. This means Carlton won't be eligible for activation until Sept. 1, though it's unclear how close he is to a full recovery. The right-hander has been shut down with right elbow inflammation.

  • Padres' Ben Gamel: Promotion made official

Gamel's contract was selected by the Padres prior to Monday's game against the Orioles.

Gamel was brought up to the big leagues after Ji-Man Choi was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a left ribcage strain. The Padres were able to clear a spot for Gamel on the 40-man roster by moving Drew Carlton (elbow) to the 60-day IL.

Gamel will be called up by the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The move is not official yet, but Gamel is set to join the big club for the first time since being acquired by San Diego in mid-July.
